What is the 5-out offense
The 5-out offense is pass and cut offensive with 5 players that start spaced out outside the the three-point line. The 5-out offense in this course is based on the read & react principle where players react on what the player who possesses the ball, other teammates or defenders are doing.
The attack is meant to have the defending team move around constantly (pass & cut) and to then seek out and attack the out of place defender to create a scoring opportunity.
The player with the ball controls the play, the other players will react to that player in only one way. They will not have to make any decisions themselves.
Every player that is not in possession of the ball has one reaction to the action of the player with the ball, or a reaction from their defender. Therefore the expression ‘action = reaction’: A player sees an action and responds with their single reaction.
With this 5-out offense, you will possess a good base that you can build from with the qualities of your team.
The pre-thaught reactions only apply to a 5-out positioning without post players, 4-out with one post player, or 3-out with two post players. Age is not an important factor, the basics can be played with 10-year-olds.
Player intuition also isn’t important since it is about learning a set reaction to what is happening.
The same principles apply for both the fast break and the press break. That creates continuity in the offense: the play automatically transitions to a standard offense, without hiccups, without a thought process to hinder the play.
